今はこちら！Skaneatelesという街に来ております！読み方はスキニーアトラス！
Here it goes! I’m in a town called Skaneateles!! (They pronounce it : Skinny Atlas)
この地域には細長い湖が沢山あり、遠くから見ると指の様な姿で並んでいるため、フィンガーレイクスと総じて呼ばれています。
This area is known for the Finger Lakes! In fact, they have a lake called Skaneateles Lake which is a part of it!
フィンガーレイクスはとても美しいと評判でニューヨーカー(州民)たちは結婚式にここを選ぶ人が多いそうです！
Because the Finger Lakes are so beautiful, it’s a destination for people to have weddings in this part of New York.
ちなみにこれらの湖は、アメリカ国内でも水深が深い湖として知られていて、1番深いのがセネカ湖で水深188m！2番目がカユガ湖で133m！長さは両方とも約61km(37.9mileと38mile)もあるという長細く深い湖！
The Finger Lakes are some of the deepest lakes in the United States. Seneca Lake is the deepest out of 11 lakes and it has 617' depth. Cayuga is the second and it has 435' depth. They both have almost the same length and they are 61km(37.9 miles and 38 miles) long!! They are deep and long!!
大きな湖がある地域というのはワイン造りに適しているそうで、このフィンガーレイクス周辺には200以上ものワイン醸造所があるのだとか！
湖の温度のお陰で秋の収穫前と春の成長期に付く霜を防いでくれるのが理由とのこと。
Places that have huge lakes are very good for making wines. In fact, there are over 200 wineries all around the Finger Lakes.
Because of the temperature of the lake, it helps in avoiding frosts in the fall time when people harvest all the grapes and in the springtime when all the grapes are growing up.
湖の名前には先住民たちの名前がつけられていて、先程のセネカ湖とカユガ湖はイロコイ族という六民族から成る先住民連合が住んでいたそうです。
All the lakes are named after Native Americans and the lakes I was talking about earlier, Seneca and Cayuga, were where Iroquois used to live.
Iroquois were a group of 6 different Native American tribes.
彼らは先住民の中でも力があり、アメリカ発見から植民地化が進む中約200年もの間、このフィンガーレイクス周辺を植民地化させなったとのこと。
ところがアメリカ独立戦争の際にイロコイ族のうちの二民族がアメリカ側に、残りの四民族がイギリス側に味方してしまったそうで、仲間打ちとなり、弱まってしまったそうです。
なんとも言えぬ結末。。
They were one of the strongest Native American confederations and they fended off being colonized around the Finger Lakes for about 200 years.
However, when the American War of Independence started, 2 groups of Iroquois supported the USA and 4 others supported England. It ended up with them fighting each other and they lost their power after the War...
アメリカには今でも先住民たちの居留地(インディアン・リザベーション)が残っていて、ニューヨーク州ではバッファローやこのフィンガーレイクス周辺に残っています。
In the US, we now have Indian Reservations and some of them are in Buffalo, NY and in Cayuga, NY.
インディアン・リザベーションにつきましてはまた目にした時にブログにしようと思います。
I think I wanna wait to write more about Indian reservations until I actually see one.
ちなみにイロコイ族はトウモロコシが主食だったそうで、ヨーロッパ人たちはアメリカで初めてトウモロコシを目にされたとのこと。
今日ではアメリカの最も多く生産されている農作物！
この辺あたりはトウモロコシ畑が沢山ありました！
By the way, corn was a main meal for the Iroquois.
As you may know, Europeans didn’t know anything about corn until they discovered America. Now corn is the biggest agricultural crop in the USA.
Today we saw lots of cornfields on our way here!!
今日はWarmShowersにお世話になり、外でテントしていいよとのことで向かったところ、こちらに一泊。
We contacted one of the WarmShowers and they told us we can stay in their yard.
Well, this is their yard and we are staying in a camper (AirStream)!!
1968年からのビンテージキャンピングカー。
外は星空がよく見え、外から見るとキャンピングカーが宇宙船の様に見えます！
It’s an AirStream from 1968!!
Outside, you can see lots of stars and it made me feel like we are in a space shuttle when I looked at the AirStream from outside:)
