【DAY17】A family who built their own house <自転車アメリカS断記 Schroon Lake, NY>

Hello!! It’s Hugh Yamada!!

This morning I woke up with sunshine coming inside through their window and with nature sounds coming from outside. Their living room was also gorgeous with morning lights, so I started the day with doing a sketch!!

While having coffee and doing the sketch, we talked with the grandmother from yesterday.
She said she built this house with her husband. They designed the house to have a ton of natural light coming in from outside so that they don’t need to use electricity.
Her husband was a stonemason.

They use natural water from the mountains for their shower and tap. The stove for cooking is based on wood fire.
They also have a wood stove to heat up their house for winter.

I don’t mean they have no electricity. They have electric lights and outlets for when they need to use them.

What made me surprised even more was that they actually laid electrical cables by themselves under their land! Also, their chairs, tables, and shelves are hand-crafted as well.

There was a time she needed to re-lay their electrical cables, however because they’d done it by themselves, she couldn’t ask any companies to do it. She remembered the place where the cables came out from their home, so she started digging from where she remembered towards the outside of their land and followed the cable.
She said it took her about a week to do it.

To build your own house by your own hands sounds like everyone’s dream at one point.
I also think if I can build my own house somewhere at some point, that would be a very exciting thing!!

On the other hand, if something breaks, if some of the wood starts to rot, if you need more electrical cables, etc... You need to figure out how to solve all of that by yourself. That sounds really, really tough to me.

Although, the people who actually have done it may say, that’s part of the story of building your own house!

The boy and mother had left a lot earlier this morning so we decided to leave a thank you note with the sketch I did this morning.

Thank you so much for having us for a night!
Hopefully we can see each other again, maybe in Japan, Africa, or somewhere on the road.

Yesterday, we rode only 25 miles so we put on a little more distance today.
Today we rode 45 miles!!!

Adirondack
We are getting closer and closer to the mountains of the Adirondacks.

At first we were heading to Paradox, however since we were using a different route from our original plan, we decided to head towards Schroon Lake.

A man who works at a hot dog shop we found on one of the roads we were on today told us we wouldn’t be able to find a place to camp out in the town of Schroon Lake.

We were lucky enough to meet a great supporter yesterday on the road, a person who takes care of all the Methodist churches in Upstate New York!! She told us if we need a place to stay, contact her so that she can contact to a pastor in the area! And so we contacted her today, and kindly she found a place for us. Thank you so much for your support!

Today’s route was enough to say we were on mountains — we had lots of hills with many ups and downs — however, Jay says this is not a mountain... mountains are coming up tomorrow!

Let’s see how many more hills are coming up from here!!!
